Sourav Ganguly is celebrating his 53rd birthday on Tuesday (July 8). The India legend led the national team for many years and achieved huge success on that front. Ganguly, who made a memorable Test debut in 1996, played a total of 113 Tests and 311 ODIs. He retired from international cricket in 2008. Ganguly backed many youngsters during his captaincy stint. Many of them went on to win the 2011 World Cup for India. On the occasion of Ganguly's birthday, here we have a look at his greatest moments -
Memorable Test debut
Sourav Ganguly made a memorable Test debut against England and scored a century at Lord's. Coming out to bat at number 3 after the fall of an early wicket, Ganguly scored 131 off 301 balls. The left-handed batsman batted with a strike rate of 43.52. He hit 20 boundaries in his knock.
There was no stopping Ganguly and he slammed another century in his next Test in Nottingham. The left-handed batsman followed up with a half-century in his next Test in Delhi.
Famous series win over Australia at home
Ganguly-led India registered a famous Test series win (2-1) over Australia at home. After losing the first Test at the Wankhede Stadium, India bounced back at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata to level the series.
India, who were bowled out for 171 in response to Australia's score of 445, scored 657/7 in their second innings. They pulled off a heist by dismissing Australia for 212 and winning the Test match. The Kolkata Test is considered to be one of the best in the history of Indian cricket. India clinched the series by winning the 3rd Test in Chennai.
Purple patch in white-ball cricket
Ganguly-led India enjoyed a purple patch in white-ball cricket from 2000 to 2003 and made it to the final of two Champions Trophies and a 50-over World Cup. The Men in Blue, though, couldn't win an ICC trophy. They lost to New Zealand in the 2000 CT final while the 2002 CT trophy was shared after both finals were washed out due to rain. India suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Australia in the 2003 WC final.
