India legend Sourav Ganguly has turned 53 and the India legend is receiving wishes from his fans and former cricketers. Social media is flooded with wishes for Ganguly, who played 113 Tests and 311 ODIs. The former India captain made his India debut in an ODI against Australia in 1992. Four years later, he played his first Test. Ganguly played his last Test match against Australia in November 2008. He captained India for a long time and backed many young players who went on to play for India for many years.
MS Dhoni was among the players who made their debut under Ganguly. Ganguly backed Dhoni and shaped his career. Speaking to Gaurav Kapoor on 'Breakfast With Champions' show, Ganguly revealed how he made Dhoni a big thing.
"When Dhoni came into the side in 2004, he played at No.7 in the first two matches. We went to Vizag (vs Pakistan) Mein new dekh raha tha and soch raha tha ki isko player kaise banaya jaye ( I was watching the news and wondering how could make a player out of Dhoni). He had great potential," Ganguly said in 2018.
"The next day in the morning, we did our warm-ups, did the toss, won it and decided to bat. While coming back I decided I will send him up the order.. We'll see what the result is.. He was sitting in shorts because he knew he would bat at No.7. I told him to go up at No.3 and he asked 'what about you?' I said 'I will bat at No.4'. And he went and scored 148. That is how you players are made." (from 10:40)
As Ganguly revealed, Dhoni batted at number 7 early in his career. He smashed a match-winning 148 after coming out to bat at number 3 in his fifth game. A year later, Dhoni hit an unbeaten 183 against Sri Lanka in Jaipur.
He moved down in the batting order after becoming the captain of the ODI team. Dhoni-led India won the 2007 T20 and 2011 ODI World Cups. In 2013, the Men in Blue clinched the Champions Trophy.
