Two-time youth world champion Sakshi, Olympian Jaismine Lamboria and Nupur clinched gold medals in their respective weight categories as India wrapped up their campaign at the Astana lege of the World Boxing Cup in Kazakhstan with 11 medals on Sunday. Sakshi delivered a dominant performance in women’s 54kg final to win the gold. The 24-year-old was at her attacking best against USA’s Yosline Perez to get a unanimous verdict from the judges. Jaismine and Nupur won the day's second and third gold medals.
Jaismine delivered a stellar performance against Brazil's Jucielen Cerqueira Romeu in the women's 57kg final to clinch the yellow metal. Nupur, meanwhile, beat local girl Yeldana Taipova in the women’s 85+ kg weight category in an unanimous decision decision (5:0) to win the gold medal.
Brazil leg gold medallist Hitesh Gulia (men’s 70kg) and Abhinash Jamwal (men’s 65kg) settled for the silver medals in their respective weight categories.
Earlier, Meenakshi pushed hard for victory against local favourite Nazym Kyzaibay in the 48kg final but ended as the runner-up with a 3:2 verdict. Jugnoo (men’s 85kg) and Pooja Rani (women’s 80kg) will also return home with silver medals after losing their respective finals. Jugnoo lost 0:5 against Bekzad Nurdauletov of Kazakhstan while Pooja went down by an identical score line against Australia’s Eseta Flint.
Besides winning medals, boxers also collected crucial ranking points with their performances at these two meets, with the top pugilists qualifying for the World Boxing Cup Finals to be hosted at New Delhi, India, in November. Over 400 boxers from 31 countries, including Olympians, competed at the Kazakhstan leg. India had sent a 20-member team for the Astana meet.
