After India registered a historic Test win at Edgbaston, levelling the five-match series 1-1 by beating hosts England by 336 runs, the question of whether Jasprit Bumrah would return to the Indian team for the third Test at Lord's has popped up. And captain Shubman Gill assured that Bumrah will "definitely" play at the Mecca of Cricket in London, starting July 10. The Indian team management's decision to rest Bumrah, who picked up a fifer in the first Test at Leeds, in the second Test at Edgbaston received a lot of criticism from fans and former cricketers alike, who questioned India's defensive intent -especially when they were trailing 0-1 in the series. However, after the thumping win at Edgbaston, that doubt no longer persisted.
In Bumrah’s absence, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep stood out on the big occasion. The duo picked up all 10 wickets in England's first innings, with Siraj taking six and Akash Deep claiming four. In England's second innings, Akash Deep pierced through the English lineup, picking up six wickets, while Siraj got one. Prasidh Krishna, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar also took a wicket each to bundle out England for 271.
Gill, on his part, led the team from the front, scoring 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second to help India set up a 608-run target for England. As a captain, his reading of the game and the pitch - which was deemed docile at the beginning of the match - also impressed the pundits.
“All the things we spoke about after the last game, we were spot on with all of those things. I think the way we came back with our bowling and fielding was tremendous to see. On this kind of wicket we knew that if we got 400–500 runs, it would be enough,” Gill told former England skipper Nasser Hussain after the game.
India, meanwhile, joined an elite league of teams by breaking into the 1,000-run club, amassing 1,014 runs at Edgbaston, with Gill alone contributing 430 runs. He is now the leading run-getter in the series, having scored 585 runs.
“I am definitely feeling comfortable with my game and if we are able to win the series with my contributions, it’ll be great. I want to play as a batsman, and go out as a batsman and make decisions as a batsman. Sometimes you won’t take some risks when you’re thinking as a captain which you have to do as a batsman,” Gill said, displaying how fast he is maturing as a leader.
In India's first innings, the team was reeling at 161 for 3, but a 203-run partnership between Gill and Jadeja (89) helped India recover. Gill then shared another 144-run stand with Washington Sundar (42) to help India post 587.
The Indian bowlers then wreaked havoc, leaving England struggling at 211 for 5. “Having them at 200 (211) for 5 – we were really happy there – and not being able to burst them open there, and being 80 (84) for 5, it’s tough to be able to scrape it back from there,” he said.
Though Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184) gave India a scare by sharing a 303-run partnership, their efforts were never enough to surpass India's first innings score. In their second innings, chasing a 608-run target, England were bowled out for 271, with Akash Deep snapping up 6 wickets - propelling India to a massive 336-run win, their biggest away victory.
