Leading India to a record-breaking 336‑run victory over England in the Edgbaston Test, Shubman Gill etched his name into Indian cricket history on Sunday. At 25 years and 301 days, he became the youngest India captain to win a Test match overseas. Gill surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s 49‑year‑old record set in 1976 against New Zealand in Auckland. Gavaskar was 26 years and 202 days old when India, under his leadership, beat New Zealand. The victory at Edgbaston - India’s first in nine Tests - helped the tourists level the five‑match series 1–1. India’s win also eclipsed their previous biggest win - 318‑run triumph over the West Indies at North Sound.
Gill led from the front, scoring 430 runs - 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second. This performance followed his 147 in the first Test at Headingley, where India lost despite his century. He is now the leading run‑getter in the series with 587 runs. With three more Tests to go, Gill is in contention for Don Bradman’s 90‑year‑old record of 974 runs in a series.
As captain, Gill demonstrated excellent game and pitch‑reading ability that reflected in his astute use of pace and spin. “Especially when you are the captain, I think you need to lead by example… so whenever there is another player in that situation, you can tell that player, this is what the team requires right now,” Gill said at the post‑match presentation ceremony. “If a good ball gets me out, it gets me out. But as long as I am there, I want to play as long as possible,” he added.
