Sofia Araújo and Andrea Ustero won the Betclic Bordeaux Premier Padel P2 as Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia won their 24th title together in Bordeaux, France, on Sunday. With this title, Araujo and Ustero became the first pair outside the top 3 to win a Premier Padel title this season. The tournament also witnessed another historic moment, as Ustero became the youngest player to win a trophy in Premier Padel at 18 years, 1 month, and 24 days. Araújo, meanwhile, claimed her third championship on the circuit, and her first this year after winning the Genova P2 and Newgiza P2 in 2024.
The Portuguese and Spanish pair defeated Carmen Goenaga and Bea Caldera (7-5, 2-6, 6-2) to win the title. Carmen and Bea reached their careers’ first final. There were high expectations for both pairs, but in the end, Araújo and Ustero prevailed. The match began with a very close first set that Ustero–Araújo took against a somewhat nervous Goenaga and Caldera (7-5). However, the young players managed to turn things around, winning the second set convincingly (6-2).
In the deciding third set, Araújo dug deep into her experience and unleashed aces while guiding Ustero - the MVP of the final - with precision. The victory established Ustero as one of the top young talents in women's padel to watch in the coming years. Tears rolled down her cheeks after she set the new milestone in Premier Padel history, with a joyous Araújo - who finally ended a title drought - consoling her.
In the men's draw, Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia remained the most dominant pair. In a classic showdown between the top pairs, Coello and Tapia defeated Fede Chingotto and Ale Galán 7-6(12), 6-4. This was another trophy for Coello and Tapia, just a week after their triumph at Plaza Mayor in Valladolid — their sixth title of the season. Overall, this was their 24th title together in Premier Padel.
The first set was a true ode to padel, with constant exchanges and tactics taking centre stage due to the slow court. In the tie-breaker, they prevailed 14-12 to clinch it. Coello was outstanding and capitalised on a couple of key errors from their opponents.
Overall, this was their 24th title together in Premier Padel, widening the gap in their head-to-head against Chingotto and Galán to 3-1. In all match-ups in padel, the gap now stands at 13-6 in favour of Coello and Tapia.
Before the summer break, the Premier Padel Tour will travel to Spain for two P1 events in Málaga and Tarragona. In the meantime, the first two stages of the FIP Euro Padel Cup will be played in Spain from Tuesday to Sunday.
