Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants, has sent birthday wishes to MS Dhoni on his 44th birthday. Sanjiv and Dhoni had a working relationship almost a decade back. The Indian business tycoon bought Rising Pune Super Giant (RPS) for a two-year period. RPS and Gujarat Lions were part of IPL 2016 and 2017. Dhoni was appointed the inaugural captain of the Pune-based franchise. He was removed before IPL 2017 and replaced by Steve Smith. RPS made it to the final of IPL 2017.
Despite that, Dhoni has often been seen with Sanjiv on the field during IPL. "Happy Birthday, Captain Cool. Lots of good wishes @msdhoni," Sanjiv wrote on X.
Dhoni has an X account but he stays off social media. He hasn't posted anything on X since January 2021. So it is unlikely that the India legend would respond to Sanjiv's post. Despite staying away from social media, Dhoni has 8.5 million followers on X.
Why LSG couldn't sign MS Dhoni?
Sanjiv Goenka made his return to IPL after he bought Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for a sum of Rs 7090 crore. LSG is the costliest franchise in IPL's history. LSG and Gujarat Titans - the second new team in IPL - were allowed to pick 3 players each before the IPL 2022 mega-auction.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retained Dhoni before the IPL 2022 mega-auction and LSG didn't have an option of picking him. LSG signed KL Rahul for a huge sum of Rs 17 crore and appointed him as their captain.
They also signed Ravi Bishnoi and Marcus Stoinis. Rahul now plays for Delhi Capitals while Stoinis is part of Punjab Kings. Ravi is still with LSG.
Dhoni continues to play for CSK. He relinquished the captaincy before IPL 2024 and now plays under Ruturaj Gaikwad's leadership. He returned as CSK's captain after Ruturaj got injured during IPL 2025.
