Shubman Gill shattered several records en route to his maiden double hundred in Test cricket during the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Gill has been in terrific form in the series and played a brilliant innings of 147 in the first Test. Gill was going through a slump in Test cricket heading into the series, and the added responsibility of leading India only added to the pressure, but Gill has come out with flying colours.
Shubman Gill Emulates Virat Kohli's Big Feat
The double hundred by Shubman Gill helped him emulate a massive Virat Kohli feat. Gill became only the second player after Virat Kohli to score 400 runs in his first three Test innings as captain. Kohli, who took over the leadership reins from Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the 2014-15 series, scored 424 runs. Kohli played knocks of 115, 141 and 147 in the first three innings as captain. Meanwhile, Gill scored 147 in the first Test against England and followed it up with a brilliant double hundred. He, however, missed out in the second innings of the first Test.
India On Top In Second Test
The double hundred by Gill, clubbed with 89 by Ravindra Jadeja and 87 by Yashasvi Jaiswal, helped India post 587 in the first innings. It was a flat surface, and England were expected to come out with a strong response; however, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj left England reeling. Akash Deep got rid of Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope in his second over before Siraj removed Zak Crawley to put India on top. England ended the day at 77-3 at stumps on Day 2, with India in complete control of the game.
