Ravindra Jadeja is the senior-most member of the present Test team. The veteran all-rounder made his Test debut against England in 2012. Three years later, Jadeja cemented his spot in the Test team. He made his white-ball debut in 2009. Despite being part of the team for 16 years, Jadeja has never led the national team. The 36-year-old has been part of the leadership group and has assisted captains on a stand-in basis. But the all-rounder has never done captaincy.
After the end of the second day's play, Jadeja was asked about his captaincy ambitions. He came up with a three-word response to it and said: "Wo time gaya (that time is gone).”
"You didn’t see how much Shubman Gill has grown? Shubman scored 269 runs. He was unlucky because aaj lag nahi raha tha ki wo out hoga (today, it never looked like he was going to get out). We were actually talking about building a long partnership," Jadeja added.
Jadeja could have been in contention to be part of the leadership group but that didn't happen. The Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee appointed Shubman Gill as the Test captain. They named Rishabh Pant as his deputy.
Jadeja retired from T20I cricket after winning the 2024 World Cup and is now active in two formats. He is India's first-choice all-rounder in both formats.
Jadeja scores 89 in first innings
Jadeja showed his class with the bat and scored a brilliant 89 off 137 balls. The left-handed batsman hit 10 boundaries and a six in his knock. He added a crucial 203-run partnership with Shubman for the sixth wicket.
Courtesy of Shubman's 269 and vital contributions from other batsmen, India put on a big total of 587 on the board. The India captain missed out on a much-deserved triple-century. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a crucial 87 off 107 balls.
