Ben Stokes hit a new career low on Friday (July 4) at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham on the third day of play in the second Test between England and India as he was dismissed for a golden duck by Mohammed Siraj to leave the hosts reeling at 84-5.
Stokes walked out to bat in the second over of the day after Joe Root was dismissed by Siraj after making just 22 runs. The England captain walked out with his team in a spot of bother, but Siraj produced a peach of a delivery which left Stokes bamboozled as he gloved into the hands of Rishabh Pant.
Ben Stokes Misses Chance To Break Rahul Dravid's World Record
This was the first time in his career that Stokes had been dismissed for a golden duck. While this was the 16th instance of Stokes departing without scoring a single run, never before had he played an innings in which he faced just ball before losing his wicket.
Stokes was playing his 202nd innings in Test cricket and had a realistic chance of breaking Rahul Dravid's stunning world record. The Indian cricket legend holds the unique feat of playing the most innings in Test cricket history without a golden duck. Dravid, who is Test cricket's fourth-highest run-getter, was never dismissed for a one-ball duck in his career. The ex-Indian captain also remains the only player in history with more than 250 innings without a golden duck.
Stokes narrowly missed the record for the most innings without a golden duck by an England batter by just two innings.
