KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Gukesh made Magnus Carlsen eat humble pie
  • Gukesh is leading the charts in the tournament
  • Gukesh beat Magnus for the second time in the two months
Gukesh made Magnus Carlsen eat his words on Thursday (July 3) by continuing his dream run in the ongoing SuperUnited Rapid Chess tournament, which is currently taking place in Zagreb, Croatia. The Classic World Champion defeated the World No.1 in a result that has sent shockwaves in the Chess fraternity.
Gukesh and Magnus went head-to-head on the second day of action in the tournament. Gukesh was playing with Black pieces and produced a performance that will be remembered for ages to come. The 19-year-old dominated the Norway star, who is widely regarded as the greatest Chess player to ever play the game.
This is the second time in the space of as many months that Gukesh has beaten Carlsen. Last month, Indian defeated him for the first time in history at the Norway Chess Tournament. While that was in the Classical format, where Gukesh is the undisputed world champion, his credentials were questioned by Carlsen in the shorter Rapid format and calling him one of the weakest players in the competition. The Indian star responded in the manner he knows best by producing a win.
“I think Gukesh played quite well here last time, but it remains to be proven that he’s one of the best players in this format. We have a very, very strong field…Gukesh hasn’t done anything to indicate that he’s going to do well in such a tournament. I hope, for his sake, that he can do better. But playing him in this tournament, I will approach it as if I’m playing one of the presumably weaker players (in the tournament)," said Magnus.
Gukesh, who was in the joint-lead after Day 1, now has a two-point lead after Day 2, going into the final day play on Friday. The teenager started the competition with a defeat against Poland's Jan-Krzystof Duda before winning five games in a row with wins over Alireza Firouzja, Praggananda, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Fabiano Curana, and Carlsen.
"It's nice that I could win two games in a row from losing positions — and against Magnus," said Gukesh.
