KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Bangladesh's batting unit was left embarrassed
- Sri Lanka set multiple world records
- Sri Lanka won the game by 77 runs
Chasing a total of 245 to win, Bangladesh were on track to win the first ODI of a three-match series against Sri Lanka at 100-1 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. However, what happened next left cricket fans in shock as the visitors were reduced to 105-7 in a space of just 27 balls.
Bangladesh lost seven wickets while adding just five runs on the board as Sri Lanka put themselves on course of a victory, which was looking impossible a few minutes ago. The home side ended up taking 1-0 lead in the series with a huge victory of 77 runs after bowling out the Mehidy Hasan Ali Miraz-led side for 167.
Bangladesh Suffers Embarrassment As Sri Lanka Sets World Record
Bangladesh's capitulation in Colombo is the second-worst seven-wicket collapse in ODI history. Only Zimbabwe have lost seven wickets for the least runs in an ODI match before, which also came against Sri Lanka in 2008 at the Harare Sports Club. Infact, the three worst seven-wicket collapses in ODI history have now come against the 1996 World Champions.
By taking seven wickets within a space of five runs against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka have become the first team to take seven wickets for five runs or lower in an ODI while bowling second and at home. They broke their own record set against Afghanistan last year at Pallekeke. Sri Lanka is also the only team in the world to have three instances of taking seven wickets within a gap of seven runs or lower. Only the West Indies have achieved the feat apart from Sri Lanka, which ironically came against the Asian giants.
