The Indian team are set to make a major change in the playing XI for the second Test against England at the Edgbaston Cricket Stadium in Birmingham, as the team's assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate revealed the team are likely to opt for a major tactical overhaul.
Ten Doeschate stated that there is a strong possibility that India will play with two spinners in Birmingham, with conditions expected to remain dry and help spinners. However, there was no clarity given on who the second spinner will be, with Ravindra Jadeja likely to retain his role.
While there have been widespread calls from former cricketers and experts to play Kuldeep Yadav, Ten Doeschate has thrown a surprise name in the mix. The ex-Netherlands cricketer stated that Washington Sundar could get the nod with his batting ability a key factor.
"There is a very strong chance of playing 2 spinners. It's about juggling the batting depth. All three are bowling really nicely. Washington is batting very nicely. It's about which combination we go with. The all-rounder spinner or the out-and-out spinner. We have to play the bowling all-rounder again. There are so many variables. The wicket has got 11 miles at the moment. The wicket is quite dry and patchy. It's quite dry underneath, but there is also rain forecast for Wednesday. We are trying to weigh up the two options on how we want to go attacking wise. I am pretty sure two spinners will play in this Test match," said Ten Doeschate in a pre-match press conference.
Asked about Kuldeep in isolation, the Indian assistant coach claimed that his inclusion comes down to team balance with the team looking for batting depth in the 6-7-8 roles.
"We would love to get Kuldeep on the team. Playing two all-rounders in the last game would have been nice have a spinner. We know we are going to need two spinners in this game, it's about how we manage the 6-7-8 roles and whether we can fit Kuldeep in, now or sometime later in the series, where it will turn if the weather stays this way," Ten Doeschate stated.
Kuldeep has played 13 Tests in his career, which have come in a period of eight years. He has an impressive record in red-ball cricket with 56 wickets at an average of 22.16. He is also the fastest Indian to take 50 wickets (by balls). He is also the quickest spinner to the milestone across the world in 100 years
Kuldeep also troubled England last year when the Ben Stokes-led team visited India with 19 wickets in four matches.
