It has emerged that the ex-Indian captain has moved to trademark the term 'Captain Cool.' Dhoni's application appeared on the Trade Marks Registry portal, which has been 'accepted and advertised.' The trademark was published in the official trademark journal, which appeared on June 16, 2025.
It has been further revealed that the trademark is valid on sports training equipment and facilities as well as coaching services.
“Delighted to share a recent development from the field of trademark law that underscores the evolving role of personality rights and acquired distinctiveness in overcoming relative grounds for refusal,” said Dhoni's lawyer, Mansi Aggarwal to India Today.
"The phrase ‘Captain Cool’ has acquired a distinct secondary meaning through a long-standing and widespread association with Mr Dhoni, the former captain of the Indian national cricket team," she added.
For those unversed, Dhoni was nicknamed 'captain cool' by fans and the media during his playing career, as alongside was one of the greatest captains the world has seen, who achieved unprecedented success, his calm and composed personality stood out with a distinct ability to keep hold of his nerves in high-pressure situations.
Dhoni is not the first international sportsman to do so, with legends like Ronaldo (CR7), Usain Bolt (victory pose), and Michael Jordan (Air Jordan) doing so in the past in order to make their personal brand stronger.
Dhoni's lawyer also stated that the 2011 World Cup-winning captain faced hurdles on the way, as their application faced hurdles as the registry initially raised objections under section 11(1) of the trade mark due to the presence of similar marks.
