India conceded a chance to take the lead in the five-match Test series against England as they failed to beat the hosts despite setting a 371-run target at Headingley, Leeds. As they aim to bounce back in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, starting July 2, the chances of a comeback still look bleak. Historically, India have never fared well at Edgbaston. The venue in Birmingham has witnessed India's long-standing winless streak. India have played seven Tests here and won none. The forthcoming second Test will be India’s eighth at the venue.
Besides Edgbaston, Old Trafford in Manchester and Kensington Oval in Barbados have also seen India go winless in nine Test matches each. Edgbaston ranks second on the list of venues where India are yet to register a Test win. Next is the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, where India have failed to win in seven matches, followed by Bourda in Guyana and the National Stadium in Karachi, which have each hosted six winless outings for India.
At Headingley, India dominated the majority of the Test, scoring 835 runs across two innings — 471 and 364 — with four batters scoring five centuries. But Ollie Pope's hundred in the first innings and Ben Duckett's 149 in the second stole the show from India. England handed India a five-wicket defeat to go 1-0 up in the series.
Now, as India look to end their 58-year-old jinx at Edgbaston, they are at odds due to their poor record. Moreover, India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be rested as part of workload management. Bumrah’s absence will not bode well for India, as the rest of the bowling attack lacked sharpness in the first Test. The Edgbaston pitch and conditions are also likely to favour England’s strengths.
India first played at Edgbaston in 1967 and have never won. The upcoming Test presents India with a chance to change the anomaly.
