Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the cusp of breaking a 49-year-old record and becoming the fastest Indian batter to score 2,000 runs in Test cricket. Jaiswal slammed a well-measured hundred in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds. With the second Test starting on July 2, the southpaw will look to maintain his fine form against England.
Jaiswal has piled up 1,903 runs in 20 Tests so far at an average of 52.86. He is now just 97 runs away from breaking legendary Sunil Gavaskar's nearly half-a-century-old batting record.
Gavaskar, who was the first cricketer to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket, reached the 2,000-run milestone in his 23rd Test, which he played against the West Indies in Port of Spain from April 7 to 12 in 1976. Current India head coach Gautam Gambhir comes next on the list, having achieved the feat in 24 Tests. Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag completed 2,000 runs in their 25th Test matches respectively.
However, in terms of innings, Dravid remains the fastest Indian to achieve the 2,000-run landmark -a feat he shares jointly with Sehwag. The former India captain reached the milestone in 40 innings against New Zealand in Hamilton on January 2, 1999. Sehwag equalled his record against Australia in Chennai on October 14, 2004. Gambhir, meanwhile, needed 43 innings to complete the 2,000-run mark.
Jaiswal, who has batted in 38 innings so far, is also in contention to break the Indian record held by Dravid and Sehwag in terms of innings.
However, the world record for the fastest 2,000 runs belongs to none other than Don Bradman, who crossed the mark in his 15th Test (and 22nd innings) against South Africa on November 27, 1931.
