India suffered a crushing defeat to England in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds. India had their moments in the Test, but they let the advantage slip away. They were 430-3 in the first innings, set for a near 600 score, but collapsed to get bowled out for 471. In the second innings, they lost the last seven wickets for 77 to get bowled out for 364 and set a target of 371.
Despite the collapse, 371 was a defendable target, but England made easy work of the chase. Indian bowling was mostly about Jasprit Bumrah, as other bowlers looked quite ineffective. Expectations were high from the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Prasidh Krishna, but they had a really bad game.
Siraj bowled better in the second innings, but was unlucky not to get a wicket. A few catches were dropped by India, and it eventually cost them the game.
Meanwhile, a video from the final day's play has gone viral on social media, where captain Shubman Gill was trying to motivate Mohammed Siraj. In the video, Gill can be heard saying, 'Bismillah kar do dalo Siraj bhai'
Bumrah Unlikely For 2nd Test
India has confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah will only play three matches in the series. Bumrah broke down in the fifth Test in Australia after playing all matches, and it was decided that India would use him efficiently on the England tour to manage his workload. According to reports, India will rest Jasprit Bumrah in the second Test. That's a concern for the team because Bumrah is by far their best bowler, and his absence will put a lot of pressure on the inexperienced bowling attack. The reports state that Arshdeep Singh could make his debut and replace Bumrah in the playing XI for the second test.
