Jasprit Bumrah skipped the training session on Friday as India began their preparations for the second Test against England, to be played at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on July 2. This was the first net session for Shubman Gill and Co. Along with Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna also gave the first training session a miss, raising concerns over his availability for the Test, as India aspire to bounce back in the series after losing the first Test in Leeds by 5 wickets.
According to The Times of India, Bumrah is likely to miss the second Test as part of his workload management. But his absence will not bode well for India, given how toothless the rest of the bowlers were in the Leeds Test.
On the fifth day of the first Test, when England needed to score 350 runs to win, Indian bowlers failed to deliver, as England chased down the target with 5 wickets in hand, with Ben Duckett scoring a hundred. England were 286 for four when Bumrah ended that spell with overall figures of 19-3-57-0, and he was not summoned for another over. Bumrah had picked up a five-wicket haul in England's first innings.
It allowed England to settle down, with Joe Root scoring an unbeaten half-century and guiding England home.
Meanwhile, in the first training session, India focused on improving their lower-order batting. Mohammed Siraj's outing was restricted to batting only, as the seamer worked extensively on his skills with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak.
Arshdeep Singh, on the other hand, was seen spending a lot of time with bowling coach Morne Morkel in the nets. The duo had worked overtime in Leeds to fine-tune the left-arm seamer’s run-up, back-foot landing, and overall alignment. Arshdeep, who did not play the first Test, is likely to replace Bumrah.
