Gautam Gambhir-coached Team India suffered another defeat in a Test match and went down against England in Leeds by 5 wickets. India have only managed 3 wins from 11 Tests under Gambhir's coaching and they have their task cut out against England at their home in the last four Test matches. As India suffered another Test defeat under Gambhir, his old comment on Ravi Shastri went viral on X. During an interview, Gambhir questioned Shastri's credentials and asked if he had won anything.
Shastri was part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team. In 1985, he was the Player of the Series of the World Championship of Cricket, which India won.
“I’m sure that people who haven’t won anything give these kinds of statements. I don’t know what Shastri has achieved in his career apart from winning the World Championship in Australia. I don’t think he was a part of an overseas series win. If you haven’t won anything yourself, you end up giving this kind of statement. I’m sure people wouldn’t have taken this seriously. I’m sure he must not have seen enough cricket. If he had he seen enough cricket, he wouldn’t have given that statement," Gambhir told News18 in 2018.
"It was very childish. Even if you had won 4-1, you won’t say this is the best Indian team touring abroad. You would still stay humble and say we want to take this, we want to go forward, we want to keep improving. You wouldn’t say this is the best Indian team ever overseas. This is childish. I’m sure people wouldn’t have taken this seriously. I don’t know about other people but I didn’t take it seriously because it was a very immature statement."
Ravi-coached India suffered a 4-1 defeat against England in 2018. But they bounced back strongly against Australia and won the series 2-1. It was India's first-ever series win Down Under.
In 2020/21, a second-string India emulated their heroics and registered another Test series win Down Under. In 2021, India returned home with a 2-1 lead from England.
India did not win an ICC trophy under Ravi but they did dominate the proceedings in Test cricket. India only suffered 2 home defeats during Ravi's stint as the head coach.
