India suffered a crushing defeat to England in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds. The Shubman Gill-led side had their moments in the Test, but they were not consistent enough to hold on to the advantage. They were sloppy in the field, and barring Jasprit Bumrah, hardly any bowler looked threatening at any stage of the game. But the biggest letdown was the lower order that collapsed in both innings as India let the advantage slip away.
Chasing a target of 371 to win, England won the game by five wickets, courtesy of a magnificent 149 by Ben Duckett. There was a mini-collapse in the final session when England lost Duckett and Harry Brook on consecutive balls, but Joe Root held one end and saw England get over the line. India need to learn from their mistake and make necessary adjustments in the playing XI.
India's Likely Playing XI For 2nd Test
Jasprit Bumrah could be rested from the game due to workload management. Bumrah and coach Gambhir had confirmed before the series that the pacer would only play three games in the series. If Bumrah misses out, India could bring in Arshdeep Singh as his replacement. Singh will provide a left-arm variety to the bowling.
India will also have to think about their strategy of playing Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur together. India compromised with the bowling to have a deep batting line-up, but Shardul didn't do much. India could play Nitish Reddy in place of Shardul in the second game.
India would ideally want Kuldeep Yadav in the XI as well, and they'll need Jadeja as well. To play both, India would have to possibly drop Karun Nair to make the playing XI a bit more balanced. Nair didn't look comfortable at the crease on his return game and was dismissed for a duck and 20 in the two innings respectively.
Mohammed Siraj will lead the pace attack if Bumrah misses out, and he'll most likely have Arshdeep for company. Prasidh Krishna did not have a great outing in the first Test, so it'll be a toss-up between Harshit Rana and Akash Deep for the third pacer role, and Akash has a greater chance of getting picked.
