KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- India hit an all-time low in Test cricket
- India lost by five wickets
- England registered their second-highest run-chase in history
India made a losing start to the Shubman Gill era as they lost the first test match of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar trophy by five wickets at the Headingley Cricket Ground by a margin of five wickets as England scripted history with a five-wicket win.
The Ben Stokes-led team created history by chasing down their second-highest total in the fourth innings (371) just behind their chase of 377 against the Indian team in 2022 at Edgbaston. Intrestingly, both chases have come in the last two matches between these two games on English soil. This is also the second-highest total ever chased against India.
India Hit All Team Low
With the defeat, the Indian cricket team hit an all-time low in Test cricket history. India's tally of five centuries is the most a team has scored in a losing cause during a match in the longest format of the game since the first-ever test match was played in 1877.
The Indian team are only the sixth team to score five individual tons in a match, but the first to do so in a losing cause.

Infact, only once has a team lost a match after scoring four centuries in a match, which was in 1928 when Australia lost to England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The game also saw Sir Donald Bradman score the first Test century of his career.
India's aggregate tally of 835 runs is the fourth most by a team in a losing cause. Three of the top four have come against England during Ben Stokes' captaincy. New Zealand (837) and Pakistan (847) lost matches by more runs in 2022 at Nottingham and Rawalpindi. England were on the losing end with 861 runs against Australia at Headingley in 1948, which is the highest tally by a losing team.
As far as India are concerned, they made 477 runs in the first innings with centuries from Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill. In the second innings, they made 364 runs with tons from Pant and KL Rahul.
