Mohammed Siraj was livid when Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped Ben Duckett on 97 and Team India failed to get their first breakthrough on Day 5 of the first Test at Headingley, Leeds. Siraj induced the false shot from a well-set Duckett, who top-edged a pull out to deep backwards square leg. Jaiswal came running in off the boundary and dived forward, but could not hold on to the ball, giving Duckett a life as Siraj seethed in anger.
This costly error made it four dropped catches for Jasiwal in the ongoing Test, which is the joint-most by an Indian player in a Test, according to available records.
The ongoing India vs England Test at Headingley has highlighted fielding challenges with catches going down aplenty. Alarm bells have been ringing loudly in the Test right from the start, as India struggled to latch on to their catches in the first innings, leading to missed opportunities that cost them dearly.
Watching from the dressing room, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir wore a disappointed look. Gambhir, known for his no-nonsense approach, wore a stern look on his face as India’s bowlers toiled, trying to maintain morale.
“Catches win matches — but only if they’re held,” summed up voices online.
As England surged near the target, apart from counting regrets, fans were quick to point out what was missing: 'Virat Kohli’s intensity and focus'.
Duckett made the most of a lifeline as he reached his hundred in fine style and put England on the driver's seat.
