The frustration was visible on the faces of Indian players as they went wicketless in the first session of play on the fifth day while aiming ot take a 1-0 lead in the series during the first Test at the Headingley Cricket Stadium in Leeds with England marching towards a massive target of 371.
Through the course of the first session, the Indian players were evidently not happy with the state of the ball and constantly called for it to change. It was first Mohammed Siraj and later Shardul Thakur who requested the chance. Indian captain Shubman Gill, as well as star batter KL Rahul, got involved in the discussions but to no avail for a long period of time.
However, the umpires did not pay heed to India's request as the ball kept passing the gauge test. The Indian team were not happy with the match officials, and captain Gill was evidently furious, as were the other players in their discussion with the umpire.
Meanwhile, the crowd at Headingley booed the Indian team following the repeated requests for a ball change.
Later, the umpires finally allowed a change of ball in the final minutes of the first session. This led to a hilarious reaction from Ravindra Jadeja, who was about to start an over and was standing near the umpire. The star Indian all-rounder celebrated in his face as the duo shared some light banter.
Talking about the match, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett have put up a 150-run opening partnership as the hosts are heading towards victory, with the Indian bowling unit struggling to make an impact.
Earlier, India posted totals of 477 and 364 while also taking a first-innings lead as the hosts were bowled out for 471 in the first innings of the match.
The two teams are playing a five-match Test series with the second game set to start on July 2 in Edgbaston.
