Jasprit Bumrah claimed his 12th fifer away from home and 14th overall in Tests to set the record for most fifers by an Indian bowler in England. Bumrah has now completed three five-wicket hauls in English conditions as England were bowled out for 465 in the first innings in reply to India’s 471.
He has also become the first Asian bowler to take 150 Test wickets in SENA countries - South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia - and has overtaken Pakistan legend Wasim Akram.
As Bumrah continues to excel in red-ball cricket with his menacing pace bowling that continues to keep opposition batters on their toes, star England pacer Mark Wood hailed the India speedster as the best bowler in the world at present.
Wood, who is currently missing the England-India Test series due to a rehabilitation programme following knee surgery in March and is unlikely to return before the fifth Test, asked England batters to be wary of Bumrah's venomous bowling throughout the series. Bumrah is known for generating sheer pace and beating batters with his cunning swing and deception.
“He is a phenomenal bowler in all formats and extremely dangerous. I can honestly say he is very difficult to pick and face. He is quicker than he looks. Right now, he is the best bowler in the world - and he is capable of changing the course of a match at any moment,” Wood told Sky Sports.
Wood, meanwhile, resumed bowling in the nets and is targeting his potential return in the Oval Test, July 31-August 4.
After claiming three wickets on the second day of the Headingley Test by snapping up the wickets of Zak Crawley, Joe Root, and Ben Duckett, he added the wickets of Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue to his tally. Prasidh Krishna picked up three wickets, while Mohammed Siraj claimed two. Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur, however, went wicketless.
After Ollie Pope's measured hundred and Harry Brook's quickfire 99, England managed to cancel out India's first-innings lead.
After beginning their second innings, India lost the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan. KL Rahul (47 not out) and captain Shubman Gill (6 not out) will resume the innings on Monday, as India currently lead by 96 runs.
