India are all set to begin their campaign in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 when they take on England in a five-match Test Series beginning on June 20, with the first match at Headingley, Leeds. This will be a testing series for the young Indian team, who will be playing their first series without the two stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, after their retirements from the longest format. Shubman Gill will be playing his first series as India captain, and now he has made a bold statement.
During the press conference on the eve of the first Test match, Shubman Gill was asked which is bigger- a win in the IPL, or a Test Series win in England. Without even thinking, Gill said that winning a Test Series in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) is much bigger than an IPL win
"Definitely the Test Series, in my opinion. You know, you don't get many opportunities as a captain to be able to come to England. Maybe two, if you are the best of your generation, maybe three. And IPL comes every year and you get to go have a crack at it every year. So in my opinion, winning a test series in England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa are bigger," Gill said.
IPL Win Five Levels Below Test Cricket
Shubman Gill's statement regarding IPL and Test Cricket echoes what Virat Kohli said after winning his first IPL trophy in his career with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Making a statement supporting Test Cricket post the final in 2025, Virat Kohli said that even though this win was special, it was five levels below Test Cricket.
"This moment is right up there with the best moments I’ve had in my career. But it still marks five levels under Test cricket. That’s how much I value Test cricket. And that’s how much I love Test cricket. So I would just urge the youngsters coming through to treat that format with respect," Kohli had said.
