India will begin the fresh cycle of the World Test Championship against England in the first Test from June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. The series will be the test of a young team India, who are going through a transition phase following the retirement of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R Ashwin.
India have not won a series in England since 2007, and the upcoming Tendulkar-Anderson trophy will be a tough challenge for them. However, the team is not short on quality and is very capable of giving England a run for their money. The India squad saw Karun Nair return to the team nearly after eight years, while the vacant spots in the batting order meant that Sai Sudharsan also received his maiden India Test call-up.
Picking the right combination would be a must for India to give the team a decent chance of winning the series. The biggest selection conundrum for India will be to find the replacements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. KL Rahul is likely to promote himself up the order while Gill reportedly will bat at four, leaving three and sixth positions vacant. It'll be a toss-up between Sai Sudharsan and Abhimanyu Easwaran for the number three position, while Karun Nair will mostly bat at six.
Karun Nair Suffers Nasty Blow
Nair has been in great form of late and scored a plethora of runs in domestic cricket, which led to his comeback to the Test side. He proved the selection right after scoring a double hundred in the unofficial Test against England Lions ahead of the series. It won't be wrong to say that Nair will be a significant part of the India playing XI. Ahead of the first Test, Nair, however, suffered a nasty blow to his ribs.
He looked in some discomfort after being hit by Prasidh Krishna. The good news, though, is the injury didn't seem serious and will most likely have no effect on the batter during the first Test.
