The Indian cricket team will enter a new era in Test cricket when they take the field in the first of five Test matches against England on Friday (June 20) at the Headingley Cricket Stadium in Leeds as Shubman Gill leads the team for the first time.
This is the first time that India are touring England for a Test series against the host nation since 2021-22 when they played a five-match series over two years. While the first four matches were played in 2021, the fifth game was postponed due to COVID-19, and the team returned in 2022 for a one-off game to complete the series.
From the team that travelled to England in 2021 for a series that was preceded by the 2021 World Test Championship (WTC) final, 14 players are missing from the current team. 12 players who are in England this time around were not there on the last tour. However, it is worth noting that this includes skipper Gill and all-rounder Washington Sundar, who were selected in the squad but later ruled out due to injuries.
Meanwhile, only seven players are part of both squads.
As far as the squad for the Edgbaston Test in 2022 is concerned, only seven players are still with the team that has travelled to England. 10 players who travelled three years ago have made the trip this time, while 12 are part of the national team for the 2025 tour but were not selected in 2022.
Among the players that were on both the 2021 and 2022 squads but are not here this time are most prominently the three retired legends Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin, as well as veteran stars Cheteshwar Pujara and Mohammed Shami.
Among the newcomers is Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is widely accepted as the best young player in world cricket and has taken Test cricket by storm since his debut in 2023. Interestingly, Indian captain Gill is also on his first full tour of England, having missed out in 2021 due to an injury. Karun Nair is making a comeback to the squad while the likes of Dhurv Jurel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Arshdeep Singh are touring England for the first time. Kuldeep Yadav also did not make the squad in both 2021 and 2022 despite playing the Lod's Test in 2018.
Abhimanyu Easwaran, who is yet to make his Test debut, was part of the squad in both 2021 and 2025.
