Tharindu Rathnayake has made the cricketing world sit up and take notice of him as he plays his first-ever Test for Sri Lanka at Galle. The ambidextrous spinner has already struck gold, picking up two key wickets (Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque) in the morning session of Day 1 against Bangladesh.
Who Is Tharindu Rathnayake?
Tharindu, who bagged the wickets of Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque, is a rare commodity in the longest format.
After making his first-class debut way back in 2015 for the Sinhalese Sports Club, he has gone on to play 73 matches, bagging 337 wickets at an average of 29.30, with 26 five-wicket hauls and five 10-wicket match hauls. His best figures are a stunning 9/65.
Tharindu Explains His Thoughts
"When I started first-class cricket, I bowled a lot with my left arm. But later, it became about 60% right arm, and 40% left arm," Tharindu told theespncricinfo.
"I don't know which arm I've taken more wickets with," says Tharindu Rathnayake of his wicket tally in domestic cricket. "I've never looked at it properly. I've bowled a lot with both my arms."
"I just felt that the ball that turns into the batter is harder for them to face because this wicket is suited to the batters. When you bowl right-arm offspin against right-handed batters with the red ball, it's not easy for them to play. When I bowl offspin, I also have more options with the fields I can set. With left-arm spin, because the wicket is not behaving as we want it to, they can put the ball into gaps, and they have more scoring options," he explained.
