Aryna Sabalenka says she has offered a written apology to Coco Gauff for her 'completely unprofessional' remarks after her loss to the American in the French Open final. Sabalenka, who put up an error-strewn performance in the final, lost 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4 to Gauff earlier this month.
After the match, the Belarusian player had gone berserk and said the "worst final I ever played." She also undermined Gauff’s feat, saying, "I think she won the match not because she played incredible [but] just because I made all of those mistakes."
Opening up on the final and the remarks she made afterwards, Sabalenka said she "absolutely regretted" her comments. "That was just completely unprofessional of me. I let my emotions get the better of me," the 27-year-old told Eurosport Germany.
"I am just a human being who is still learning in life. I think we all have those days when we lose control. I wrote to Coco afterwards — not immediately, but recently," she added.
The French Open final was Sabalenka's second loss to Gauff in a Grand Slam final. She had earlier lost to the American at the US Open last year. This was Sabalenka's second loss in a final this year as well. Earlier in 2025, she lost the Australian Open final to Madison Keys.
In the final against Gauff at Roland Garros, Sabalenka committed 70 unforced errors and struggled to keep her composure.
"I was super emotional and not very smart at that press conference," Sabalenka added. "It took me a while to revisit it, to approach it with open eyes and to understand. I realised a lot about myself. Why did I lose so many finals? I kept getting so emotional. So it was a tough but very instructive lesson for me." Both Sabalenka and Gauff could meet again as they gear up for Wimbledon, starting June 30.
