Angelo Mathews will end his Test career after playing the first game of the two-match series against Bangladesh in Galle. One of the best all-rounders to represent Sri Lanka, Mathews will continue to play white-ball cricket and he aims to retire after the 2026 T20 World Cup. Wishes are pouring in for Mathews, who will don the Test cap for the 119th time.
Rohit Sharma, who retired from Test cricket a month ago, sent a heartfelt message to Mathews before his last Test match. Rohit and Mathews have been on-field opponents from their U-19 days and both made it big at the international level.
"Hey Angi, congratulations on your fantastic career. Over the years we had some pretty good battles from our under-19 days to now. You’ve been a true servant for your nation and I’m pretty sure everyone back at home appreciates what you’ve done for your country," Rohit said.
Unlike Mathews, Rohit didn't get a farewell Test match. In fact, he dropped himself from the playing XI for the fifth Test of the series against Australia. Rohit had confirmed that he would continue as the Test captain but he announced a shock retirement few weeks before the selection meeting. He will continue to play ODIs.
As for Mathews, he will end his Test career with more than 8000 runs and 33 wickets. The right-handed batsman has piled up 8167 runs in 118 Tests. His tally includes 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries. Mathews will aim to end his Test career on a high and score big in the series opener.
"There are six more months until the next T20 World Cup, and I'll give it a try depending on what my body tells me. I hope to retire from white-ball cricket at that World Cup. If we can win another World Cup, I'll try to contribute toward that. So I'll do everything I can to improve my fitness and skills over the next six months," Mathews said ahead of his farewell Test match.
