Joe Root etched his name in the history books despite England not reaching the final of the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) following South Africa's victory over Australia in the summit clash at Lord's last week as they were crowned champions for the first time.
While the Proteas' victory ensured a new champion emerged in all three editions after New Zealand won the inaugural edition, Australia lifted the title in 2023. Root finished as the top scorer of the 2023-25 cycle with 1968 runs in 22 matches at an average of 54.66 with seven centuries. Meanwhile, Australian captain Pat Cummins finished as the leading wicket-taker in this cycle with 80 wickets in 18 matches.

Joe Root Creates History In WTC

As a result of his historic season in the 2023-25 WTC, Root has become the first player in history to finish as the top scorer of multiple cycles. The former English captain finished as the leading run-getter of the 2021-23 cycle too, making him the first batter to top the run-getters list in back-to-back cycles. Infact, Root also finished as the second-highest run-getter in the inaugural cycle (2019-21) and missed out on the first spot to Australia's Marnus Labuschagne by just 15 runs.
Highest Run-Getters In Each WTC Cycle
2019-21
Player Runs Centuries
Marnus Labuschagne 1675 5
Joe Root 1660 3
Steve Smith 1341 4
2021-2023
Player Runs Centuries
Joe Root 1915 8
Usman Khawaja 1621 6
Marnus Labuschagne 1576 5
2023-25
Player Runs Centuries
Joe Root 1968 7
Yashasvi Jaiswal 1798 4
Ben Duckett 1470 2
Root also broke his own record for the highest run-getter in a single WTC cycle this around. Despite the England legend's brilliance over the last two years, the Ben Stokes-led side failed to reach the final and finished fifth in the table. England are yet to reach the final of the mega event despite the summit clash being hosted on their shores on all three occasions.
Root also holds the record of the most runs (5543) and centuries (18) in WTC history. No other player has more than 5000 runs apart from him while the player with the second most tons (Steve Smith) has only 13 centuries.
As far as the bowlers are concerned, the highest wicket-taker has been a different player in each cycle, with Ravichandran Ashwin (2019-21), Nathan Lyon (2021-23), and Pat Cummins (2023-25) taking the honours.
