Ireland fast bowler Liam McCarthy made his T20I debut on Sunday (June 15) against the West Indies in Bready, Northern Ireland, but it turned out to be a nightmare for him as he conceded 81 runs in his quota of four overs.
McCarthy, a seam bowler, ended his T20I debut with the unwanted record of having the second-worst bowling figures in the shortest format of the game.
After Ireland captain Paul Stirling won the toss and chose to bowl first, McCarthy was introduced into the attack in the fifth over of West Indies’ innings. West Indies T20I captain Shai Hope hammered him for two back-to-back sixes on his first two balls. Evin Lewis then struck boundaries on the fourth and fifth deliveries to collect 21 runs from McCarthy’s first over.
When McCarthy returned to bowl his second over, he was hit for 24 runs. Lewis ran riot, smashing 6, 4, 4, and 4 on the first four deliveries, while Hope added another boundary on the final ball.
In his third over, Shimron Hetmyer took him to the cleaners, hitting fours on the first, fifth, and sixth balls. Keacy Carty also joined in, smashing a boundary on the third ball to take 18 runs from the over.
McCarthy’s final over offered no redemption. Carty struck one four and two sixes, bringing McCarthy’s figures to 81 runs from four overs without a wicket.
This remains the second-worst bowling figure in the history of T20 Internationals. Only Musa Jobarteh of Gambia has conceded more runs in a T20I match, giving away 93 runs against Zimbabwe in four overs in Nairobi in October 2024 during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa Qualifier Group B.
Third on the list is Sri Lanka’s Kasun Rajitha, who conceded 75 runs against Australia in October 2019.
