Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ended their 18-year-long wait to win the IPL trophy by defeating Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 final on June 3. AB de Villiers, who represented RCB for 11 years, was in attendance for the final along with Chris Gayle, who played for RCB for 7 years. de Villiers and Gayle celebrated RCB's title win with Virat Kohli and other members of the team.
de Villiers developed a strong bond with Virat during his time with RCB and they share a good rapport. But Virat stopped talking to his former teammate in 2024.
Speaking to Cricket.com, de Villiers made a shocking reveal and said that Virat stopped talking to him. The former South Africa captain was "relieved" when Virat started talking to him again.
"I know we were in the same boat because we spoke about it. He's been in touch with me over the last six months. Thank goodness, because I did have a bit of a footfall not so long ago when they were expecting their second child. So I was very relieved when he started talking to me again," de Villiers told Cricket.com.
For the unversed, Virat skipped the five-match Test series against England to be with his wife, Anushka Sharma. The couple announced the birth of their baby boy on February 20, 2024. They were blessed with their second child on February 15.
What did AB de Villiers say?
Nearly 10 days before the birth of Virat's second child, AB de Villiers revealed that Virat was missing the England Test series to be with his family.
"Yes, his second child is on the way. Yes, it's family time and things are important to him. If you are not true and genuine to yourself, you lose track of what you are here for. I think most people's priority is family. You can't judge Virat for that. Yes, we miss him, but he has made the right decision," he said on his YouTube channel.
A few days later, de Villiers said that the information he gave on his YouTube channel was wrong. "Family comes first and then Cricket. I made a terrible mistake on my YouTube channel. That information was wrong and not true at all. Virat has every right to take a break from national duties due to family reasons. I think whatever's best for Virat's family, comes first. No one knows what's happening there, all I can do is wish him well. Whatever the reason for his break, I hope he can come back stronger, better and fresh from this," he told Dainik Bhaskar.
Virat made his return to competitive cricket in IPL 2024 and won the Orange Cap. He delivered a Player of the Final performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup to propel India to a title win. Virat and Rohit Sharma retired from the shortest format few minutes after the final. They recently retired from Test cricket too.
