The World Test Championship has a new champion as South Africa finally broke their ICC title jinx by handing defending champions Australia a 5-wicket defeat at Lord's, London. And it is now time to shift focus to a high-octane series between England and India.
India are set to play England in a five-match Test series, starting June 20 in Leeds. Ahead of the series, South Africa legend Dale Steyn made a big prediction - close fight but one clear winner. Steyn said England will beat the young Indian side, led by newly appointed captain Shubman Gill, 3-2.
“All games will be close. But all will have a result. I think it will be 3-2 in favour of England. There will be a result in every Test match. There will be no runaway win for any team, all five games will be very close," Steyn said while speaking to JioHotstar after the end of the WTC final on Saturday.
England's record under coach Brendon McCullum certainly backs Steyn's prediction. In the 20 matches England have played under McCullum at home, they have won 15 and lost four. Just one game has ended in a draw — a 75 percent winning rate.
Steyn, meanwhile, heaped praise on South Africa after they proved their doubters wrong and defeated Australia by a big margin of five wickets in the WTC final.
“From the start of this World Test Championship cycle, South Africa knew they had to win a certain number of games to make it to the final — and they did that, winning seven in a row, regardless of the opposition. It doesn’t matter who you’re up against, anyone who’s played Test cricket will tell you that winning even a single Test match is never easy. To win seven consecutively, earn a spot in the final, and then go on to get over the line today — that’s absolutely huge,” he said.
“These are two massive teams. They’ve been fierce rivals for years. Australia commands a lot of respect from every South African cricketer for all that they’ve achieved, especially their world titles. So South Africa knew this was going to be one of their toughest tests," Steyn added.
