Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced shock retirements from Test cricket before the team selection for the England tour. Both India legends were expected to be part of the series but they decided to quit red-ball cricket. Rohit, who led India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, had confirmed that he wasn't retiring from Test cricket.
The former India captain dropped himself from the playing XI for the fifth Test match but didn't have any plan to retire. Virat, who only managed one century in Australia, played a Ranji Trophy game after returning home and looked set to tour England. Both former Test captains had retired from T20Is in 2024 and they are now only active in ODIs.
Before the start of the England tour, Yograj Singh shared his take on their retirements and opined that they should have played Test cricket to pass the baton to youngsters. The former India pacer also revealed the '20 KM' fitness mantra he gave to Rohit.
"Virat and Rohit shouldn’t have retired from Tests. I told Rohit to get up at 5 AM and run for 20 km to keep himself fit," Yograj told Insidesport.
"Virat and Rohit can still play for another 5 years in Test cricket. They should have played. They should be there to see that the baton is passed to the youngsters. The baton has not been passed, it has been thrown to Gill."
Shubman Gill replaced Rohit as the Test captain and he is set to make his Test captaincy debut on June 20. A legend in the making, Shubman has led India in 5 T20Is. He is India's vice-captain in white-ball cricket.
Shubman leads Gujarat Titans in IPL and has done captaincy in domestic cricket too. He has ample captaincy experience and is likely to excel on the captaincy front in the long run.
