Kane Williamson ignored his friend Virat Kohli as he unveiled his all-time Test XI of the 21st century. Williamson and Virat have been on-field rivals since their U-19 days. But they share a great bond off the field. Following the win over New Zealand in the 2025 Champions Trophy final, Virat namedropped Williamson and said that he was sad to see his good friend Kane on the losing side.
"Sad to see a very good friend of mine on the losing side (on Kane Williamson), but I’ve been on the losing side a couple of times when he’s been on the winning side. Only love between us," he said in March.
Williamson picked Sachin Tendulkar ahead of Virat as the number 4 batsman of his all-time Test XI team. The former NZ captain also included Virender Sehwag and MS Dhoni in his squad. He picked Ricky Ponting as the captain of his team.
Sachin is the highest run-scorer in the history of Test cricket while Sehwag was known for providing quick starts to Team India even in Test cricket. He batted with a strike rate of 82.23 in Tests. As for Dhoni, he is considered one of the best captains and wicketkeepers in the history of the game. He played 90 Tests before retiring in 2014.
Sehwag and Matthew Hayden will open the innings for Williamson's team. They will be followed by Ponting, Sachin, Steve Smith and AB de Villiers. Dhoni will bat at number 7 and do wicketkeeping.
Dale Steyn, Glenn McGrath and Shoaib Akhtar are three pacers in Williamson's team. He selected Muttiah Muralitharan as the sole spinner in his team. Williamson picked a strong squad which can challenge a team from any era in the history of the game.
Williamson is himself an icon of the game and has played 105 Tests, 173 ODIs and 93 T20Is. Recently, he once again denied a central contract from New Zealand Cricket.
