The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly requested the England Cricket Board (ECB) to name one of the post-match trophies during the India-England Test series after former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. Notably, the ECB recently decided to rename the England-India Test series - The Pataudi Trophy- to the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. The move was not well received by the cricket fraternity, who felt that cricket legacies should not be tampered with; however, it's not new for cricket boards to rename series after former cricketers.
Recently, the ECB, along with Cricket West Indies, renamed the Wisden Trophy, established in 1963, to the Richards-Botham Trophy from 2020 in a mark of respect to the two greats, Viv Richards and Ian Botham.
The India-England Test series was named 'The Pataudi Trophy' in 2007 to celebrate India’s 75th anniversary of their first Test in 1932. Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi had become the youngest Indian Test captain at the age of 21. His father, Iftikar Ali Khan, played for both England and India.
“It’s the ECB who decides on whom they want to name their series. The BCCI has no role in it as it’s their home series. We have requested them to name one of the post-match Trophy on Pataudi and they will revert to us,” a BCCI official told The Indian Express.
Meanwhile, the India tour of England will mark the beginning of a new era of Indian cricket under Shubman Gill. The 25-year-old was named the captain of the team after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket. Virat Kohli also followed Rohit and retired from the format ahead of the series.
Without Kohli and Rohit, and Mohammed Shami, who was not picked due to fitness concerns, the Indian team lacks experience, and the England tour won't be easy for them, but they have enough talent and skills to upset the hosts.
