A new era will kick off in Indian cricket when India take on England in the five-match Test series, starting June 20. This will be India's first Test series without Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma since 2011. Virat and Rohit announced their Test retirements a few weeks before the selection meeting for the England tour.
India are set to have a new opener and a new number 4 batsman following their retirements. While there is a suspense over the number 4 spot, BCCI has all but confirmed Rohit's replacement at the top.
KL Rahul is set to reclaim his opening position and he will open the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Test series. The right-handed batsman opened the innings with Yashasvi in the intra-squad practice match against India A.
Rahul is the former full-time opener of Team India. He used to open in all three formats. Rahul's dwindling form saw him lose his place in the playing XI in Test cricket. He also lost vice-captaincy. He batted in the middle-order upon his return.
Rahul opened the innings in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy when Rohit was absent. And he is now set to replace the former Test captain to reclaim his opening position. The team management is likely to give a long rope to Rahul and he is likely to play all five Tests.
As far as the number 4 spot goes, Karun Nair could be an option for that position. The right-handed batsman forced his way back into Team India on the back of a solid performance in domestic cricket and he looks set to make his return to the playing XI.
Interestingly, Karun lost his spot in the Test team after being benched for the complete England tour in 2018. Seven years later, he could make his return to the playing XI against England. The first Test of the series will be played from June 20 to 24 in Leeds.
