It has been less than two weeks, and Shreyas Iyer has lost his second final in a row. After his IPL franchise, Punjab Kings, fell short of the target by six runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2025 final on June 3, the India batter suffered yet another final defeat - this time in the T20 Mumbai League.
Iyer-led SoBo Mumbai lost to Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals in the final at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, with the batter himself failing to fire. This marked the second time in a row that Iyer failed to contribute significantly in a final. In the IPL final, he was dismissed for 12 runs off 17 balls.
But such a jinx in finals is rare for Iyer. He led his former franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL triumph in 2024. He was part of the Mumbai team that lifted the Ranji Trophy and played a pivotal role in India’s Irani Cup triumph. He also led Mumbai to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024–25. Iyer was also a crucial member of the Champions Trophy-winning Indian team in 2025.
After the heartbreak of the T20 Mumbai League final - his second loss in a summit clash in June - Iyer refused to blame his teammates.
"I do not want to pinpoint any particular incident. Overall, the boys were brilliant with their efforts. We lost just one game en route to the final. Just a one-off game where you can't single out anyone — it is basically backstabbing, and I do not enjoy that," Iyer said.
However, the 30-year-old admitted that the second consecutive loss in a final was painful. "It is pretty common to feel dejected after a final loss. It must hurt them. But when they come back next year, they'll have that extra motivation and confidence. They should be proud of their effort," said Iyer.
