Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has questioned the decision to exclude Shreyas Iyer from India’s Test squad for the upcoming England tour, openly criticising the BCCI selectors led by Ajit Agarkar. Speaking to RevSportz, Ganguly backed Iyer’s inclusion based on his form across formats over the past year.
“Iyer has been in outstanding form and should have been in England,” Ganguly said. “He’s not the same player he was when he was dropped. He’s handling pressure, scoring consistently, and even managing short-pitched deliveries better. I would have picked him just to see how he adapts to this series.”
Despite losing his Test spot after struggles with short balls, Iyer has enjoyed a purple patch. He was one of India’s top ODI run-getters in the 2023 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy. He also won the IPL 2024 title with Kolkata Knight Riders and later led Punjab Kings to their first IPL final since 2014.
Ganguly further expressed optimism about India’s chances in England. “Yes, we can win. We just need to bat well and hope Bumrah stays fit. We won in Australia with a young team missing Kohli and Rohit—so there’s no reason why we can’t do it again.”
