Not Shubman Gill! Sourav Ganguly Names 31-Year-Old Star As 'The Man' For India In England Series

India are all set to take on England in a five-match Test Series that marks their first foray into the World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign. This is a new-look India team without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, after both of them retired from the longest form of the game. Shubman Gill has been announced as the new Test captain for the Indian team. However, according to legendary India captain Sourav Ganguly, it is not Gill, but Jasprit Bumrah, who is the biggest key player for India in the series.
In an interaction with RevSportz, Sourav Ganguly said that Shubman Gill has to use Jasprit Bumrah wisely. He should let him bowl only 12 overs a day and use him as Team India's chief wicket-taker.
“[Jasprit] Bumrah is your man. You have to understand that you can’t just keep bowling him. Shubman Gill has to take note. Use him as a wicket-taker. Don’t bowl him more than 12 overs a day. Let the other bowlers step up. If you can protect Bumrah and use him as a wicket-taker, you surely have a chance," Ganguly said.
Ganguly also said India have a chance to win if they bat well and use Jasprit Bumrah well, even though England are the better side in English conditions.
"England are a better side in these conditions. But if India bat well and bat tough, and if they use Bumrah well, they will have a chance. Look, I will come back to watch Edgbaston or Lord’s, and that’s because I believe they have a chance," he added.
'Shubman Gill Has Work To Do As Test Batter'
Sourav Ganguly also pointed out that Shubman Gill has a lot of work to do to improve as a Test batter. However, he is a young captain and needs to score runs in England to be hailed as a hero.
“He still has some work to do as a Test batter. These are conditions where he needs to score runs. He is a young captain and he will learn. Imagine if he does well. How good is it? He will be hailed as a hero. You live for such situations as a player.”
