KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Kane Williamson predicted the next 'fab four'
  • Williamson, Joe Root, Virat Kohli, and Steve Smith are labelled as'Fab Four'
  • All four are modern-day legends and former captains of their countries
In 2014, New Zealand cricket legend Martin Crowe made a prediction that will go down in history books as he labelled Steve Smith, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, and Joe Root as the 'Fab Four.' Crowe made the big remark at a stage when all four were in their initial stages of their career, but went onto lead Australia, India, New Zealand, and England, respectively and dominated all three formats of the game and became legends in Test cricket.
However, the era is coming towards an end as Williamson no longer holds a central contract, Steve has quit ODIs while Kohli has retired from Test cricket and T20Is and none of them lead their countries anymore.
With the current 'Fab Four' in the sunset of their career, who is going to take the baton from them? Williamson made a bold prediction and named five players who will succeed them.
Williamson picked two Indians while also naming teammate Rachin Ravindra alongside a player from England and Australia each.
"The players that come to mind in terms of multi-format are: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rachin Ravindra, Harry Brook. And also Cam Green. Those are all outstanding players and have shown fantastic moments in all formats. All young and their games are just growing," said Williamson in an interaction with ESPN Cricinfo.
While all four have already made a strong mark on international cricket across formats, they are also slowly entering an era of captaincy. Over the last few months, Brook was named England's new white-ball skipper while Gill has taken charge as the new captain of the Indian Test team.
As far as Williamson is concerned, he has not played any international cricket since the 2025 Champions Trophy, where New Zealand lost the final to India.
Williamson is likely to be seen in action next month when New Zealand tour Zimbabwe for a T20I tri-series featuring also South Africa, after which the Black Caps will play two Test matches against the host nation.
