KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Australia and South Africa will play each other in the 2025 WTC final
  • There is a reserve day in place
  • The reserve day will not used if the match ends in a draw
Australia and South Africa will go head-to-head in the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) final from Wednesday (June 11) at the Lord's Cricket Ground as both teams battle to be crowned the third champions of the tournament.
The Australian team have a golden chance to become the first team to win the trophy twice and also defend the title. The Pat Cummins-led Australian side had won the 2023 edition after beating India in the summit clash at Oval.
As far as South Africa is concerned, they are looking to end a 27-year drought and win their first ICC trophy since 1998. The Proteas are playing the summit clash of the WTC for the first time and are coming into the summit clash after winning each of their last seven Test matches.

What Happens if WTC Final Ends In A Draw, And What About The Reserve Day?

While draws have become increasingly rare in Test cricket, the possibility always exists in a red-ball match. If that happens in the match between Australia and South Africa, the two teams will share the trophy and be declared winners.
The WTC final does have a reserve day, and one was also used in the inaugural clash between India and New Zealand in 2021 at Southampton. However, it is worth pointing out that the reserve day will only be used in case overs are lost in the match due to bad weather. On the extra day, which is Monday (June 16), only the amount of overs lost due to rain/bad light/wet outfield will be played instead of a full day's play (unless required).
This means that a reserve day will not be used in case there are no rain interruptions, and if after the fifth day of play, the match ends in a draw, the two teams will have to share the trophy.
