Rajasthan Royals' captain Sanju Samson didn't have the best of IPL 2025, scoring 285 runs in 9 matches at a strike rate of 140.39, which includes a fifty against Sunrisers Hyderabad. His team finished ninth in the points table this season in the Indian Premier League, with four wins, just above Chennai Super Kings. While Samson missed as many as five matches due to an injury in the recently concluded edition, Riyan Parag was given the responsibility to captain the side in his absence, but that hardly made any difference to their campaign.
Now, a recent post on social media left fans speculating about Samson's future with the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. The post claimed a Shreyas Iyer–Rishabh Pant–style situation, reminiscent of their time at Delhi Capitals, highlighting the star Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s growing ambition to take over the captaincy.
"Sanju Samson is all set to leave Rajasthan Royals. He is already in talks with 2 big franchises who needs an Indian wicket keeper batter desperately. At RR, Shreyas-Pant kind of situation arised where Jaiswal want captaincy & RR has no other option but to agree to him," the post claimed.
Sanju Samson to leave RR?
Reacting to the post, one user wrote, "How Samson is at fault? He was treated badly this year by RR," while another one commented, "CSK should take him." Some even floated the idea that KKR should get him while another user said, "Sanju is Virat Kohli of Rajasthan Royals."
Sports Now cannot independently verify the authenticity of the claim, but it is highly unlikely that Samson, who continues to remain the captain for the Rajasthan-based franchise, will switch over to any other IPL side before 2027. The next mega-auction is likely to take place after the 2027 IPL season and ahead of the 2028 season.
Another aspect is that if Rajasthan Royals were truly considering replacing Samson as captain, they could have explored that option this season when he was sidelined for a significant period due to injury. Even in that regard, it appears as if Parag is ahead of Jaiswal in the captaincy race, at least for the time being, since he took over the duties from Samson in his absence.
