A new era will kick off in Indian cricket when Shubman Gill makes his Test captaincy debut against England on June 20. This will be India's first England tour without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli since 2011. Both India legends announced their Test retirements before the selection meeting for the series and are now only active in ODIs. Shubman will have Rishabh Pant as his deputy.
Jasprit Bumrah once looked set to replace Rohit as the Test captain but he isn't part of the leadership group. Speaking on The ICC Review, Ricky Ponting explained why it was the right move to appoint Shubman as Test captain ahead of Bumrah.
"I actually think it's the right move. I know there's a lot of other people out there, pundits out there saying they can't understand why it wasn't Bumrah and why they have gone to Shubman, but I think it's pretty simple," the Australia legend said.
"Bumrah's injuries are holding him back a bit in the last couple of years and you don't want that with a captain. You can't have a captain coming in and missing games here and there, so I think it's I think it's the right decision. Now that they've made it, it's one they've got to stick with and give him a good crack at it for, for a long period of time. Even just looking back at the way he's handled this current GT (Gujarat Titans) team through this IPL, I think leadership sits really well with him."
Shubman is the present vice-captain of the white-ball teams and he could become India's all-format captain in the next couple of years. He has captained India in 5 T20Is so far.
As for Bumrah, he was appointed Rohit's deputy in Test cricket in 2022. He has led India in three Tests. Under him, India kicked off the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a win in Perth. Bumrah was leading India in the final Test match when he suffered a back issue. He didn't bowl in Australia's chase. India lost the game and lost the series 3-1.
