The upcoming five-match Test series between India and England starting from June 20 at the Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds will not just the the start of a new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle but also a new era in the rivalry between the two countries, which started 93 years ago.
After the England Cricket Board's (ECB) decision to retire the Pataudi Trophy, a new prize will be unveiled later this month as the Shubman Gill and Ben Stokes-led teams will contest for the 'Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy' as Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson are handed the ultimate honour by the two nations as per a report by BBC.
Tendulkar and Anderson are among the greatest players to play the sport and are unarguably the two greatest players India and England have respectively produced in Test cricket.
Tendulkar is the highest run-getter (15921) in Test cricket history, while Anderson has the third-most wickets (704) and is the leading wicket-taker among pacers in the longest format of the game. Tendulkar (200) and Anderson (188) are the most capped players in Test cricket history too.
From 2007 onwards, Test series between India and England played in England were named as the Pataudi Trophy, named after ex-Indian captain Iftikhar and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Iftikhar is among a rare list of cricketers to play Test cricket for both India and England. After a 2-2 draw in the 2021-2022 series, the hosts ended as the finals winners of the prize.
It is worth noting that Test series between the two nations on Indian soil are known as the 'Anthony de Mello' trophy since 1951-52. At the moment, there is no confirmation on whether the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy will be played in India or only used in the series held in England.
Talking about the upcoming series after the series opener in Leeds, the remaining matches will be held in Edgbaston, Lord's, Manchester, and the Oval.
