As Royal Challengers Bengaluru's celebration of their maiden IPL win turned into a tragedy, with a stampede claiming the lives of at least 11 people and leaving several injured, India's 1983 World Cup-winning hero Madan Lal said the franchise should be sued.
After RCB ended their long wait for an IPL title - their first in four attempts at the final - in Ahmedabad on June 3, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) had organised a felicitation ceremony in Bengaluru on Wednesday. More than 2 lakh people had gathered outside the Vidhana Soudha and Chinnaswamy Stadium, hoping to catch a glimpse of the RCB stars.
However, as the crowd swelled and the police found it difficult to control them, it resulted in a stampede, claiming the lives of 11 people. The injured were rushed to hospitals.
"People will not forget this – or Virat Kohli. While people were dying outside, there was a celebration inside. It's truly shocking and disheartening. The families of the dead should consider suing RCB and the state government for Rs 100 crore for this tragic mishap... BCCI is also shirking responsibility," former Indian cricketer Madan Lal told IANS.
Earlier in the day, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed the media after the incident and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the dead.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who congratulated Kohli personally, defended the arrangements, stating, “We had arranged for 5,000 police personnel. We couldn't use force on such a young, vibrant crowd.”
The government of Karnataka had earlier cancelled the victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, citing security reasons.
