Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ended the long wait of their fans as they lifted their maiden IPL title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the final of the IPL 2025. They planned to celebrate this monumental achievement with fans in Bengaluru the day after the final i.e Wednesday (June 4). However, these celebrations turned tragic, as there was a stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium that led to the deaths of 11 people, while 33 people were injured. Amidst these, Gautam Gambhir's fiery and direct statement on such a situation has now gone viral.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won their second IPL trophy back in 2014 under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir. Just one day after the final in Bengaluru, a felicitation ceremony for the victorious team took place in the Eden Gardens. More than 60,000 people gathered outside the stadium to witness the action. However, there was chaos and confusion, which led the police to lathicharge on them.
In his column for Hindustan Times in 2014, Gautam Gambhir expressed his disappointment at the situation. In a strong statement he declared that he was done with such felicitations that causes fans to be mistreated.
"I must say I was disappointed by the inconvenience KKR's felicitation ceremony caused to Kolkatans. As it is cricket fans in India, who are the most important stakeholders, are not treated well. To make matters worse there was lathicharge on innocents. God-willing my KKR team wins many more trophies but as far as I am concerned we're done with such felicitations," Gambhir wrote.
How Virat Kohli Reacted To Stampede
Virat Kohli, the superstar icon of RCB, expressed his sadness at the loss of lives due to the stampede. He shared RCB's official statement on his social media profiles, with an emotional one line caption.
"At a loss for words. Absolutely gutted," Kohli wrote.
