Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) title victory celebration turned sour on Wednesday (June 4) after the Rajat Patidar-led side arrived back in Bengaluru following their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title victory after beating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the summit clash at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday (June 3).
Grand celebrations were planned in the city, which included a meeting with the Karnataka chief minister as well as an open bus parade before the team entered the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium for a felicitation ceremony.
However, a stampede occurred outside the stadium in which atleast 11 people are feared dead with several others injured. More details on the victims are still awaited.
RCB faced criticism over their actions as the celebrations continued inside the stadium despite the situation outside the venue. The franchise has broken its silence and offered condolences to the families of the deceased and claimed they took prompt action after being made aware of the situation.
"We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us.RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families.
Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program, and followed, the guidance and advice of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe," said RCB in a statement.

RCB-KSCA Announce Financial Compensation

RCB and the state association, Karnataka Cricket Assocation (KSCA) announced a Rs. 5 lakh compensation for families of the deceased.
“RCB - KSCA announces 5 lakhs to the families of those who have lost their loved ones. We hope this gesture can offer some support and solace in their time of grief.
“We want to emphasize that this compensation is not intended to determine or replace the value of human life, but rather to serve as a gesture of support and solidarity during such challenging times. Thank you for your understanding and support," a joint statement by RCB and KSCA read.
Skipper Rajat Patidar and ex-captain Virat Kohli addressed the crowd inside the stadium. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal claimed that the franchise officials inside the stadium were not aware of the situation and assured him that the programme would be immediately wrapped upon being informed.
This is the first instance of RCB lifting the trophy, ending a 17-year drought.
