Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ended their IPL trophy drought and defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the final to lift the IPL 2025 trophy. Rajat Patidar, who took RCB's captaincy before IPL 2025, created history and became the first captain to lead the Bengaluru-based franchise to a title win. Rajat first joined RCB in the IPL 2021 mini-auction.
Rajat made his return to RCB as a replacement player during IPL 2022. His on-field success saw him take over the captaincy before IPL 2025. Apart from Rajat, there are three more captains who led their respective teams to win an IPL title win in their debut season. Here's a look at them -
Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma took over as the captain of Mumbai Indians during IPL 2013. Ricky Ponting stepped one and all bt stepping down as MI's captain during the season. The team management inked on Rohit, who did the unthinkable by leading MI to a title win.
Rohit captained MI to a total of 5 title wins before being replaced by Hardik Pandya. He has played 2 seasons under Hardik so far.
Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya shocked he cricketing fraternity by leading Gujarat Titans (GT) to an IPL title win in their debut season as the captain in 2022. Hardik, who was released by MI before the IPL 2022 mega-auction, joined GT in the pre-auction draft.
A year after leading GT to a title win, Hardik captained the franchise to the final. He moved back to MI before IPL 2024 and is their present captain.
Shane Warne
Shane Warne etched his name in history books by leading Rajasthan Royals (RR) to an IPL title win in the debut season. RR were considered one of the underdogs in IPL 2008 and not many gave them a chance. They stunned the cricketing world by lifting the IPL 2008 trophy. RR haven't won an IPL trophy since then.
